Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras are two of the most popular days of the year for buying gold in India. Both are considered auspicious for new purchases, and jewellers prepare for them with new designs, offers and long opening hours. Knowing how the day works helps you enjoy the occasion without paying more than you need to.

What to expect on the day

Crowds. Shops are busy, and the best designs in popular weights can sell out. If you have a specific piece in mind, visit in the days before and note the price.

Offers. Many jewellers discount or waive part of the making charge, or offer free coins on larger purchases. An offer is only good if the overall price is good, so compare the total bill, not just the discount.

Rates. Demand can nudge rates around festivals, but the main drivers of the gold price remain the global price and the rupee. Do not assume the festival day will be cheaper or dearer than the days before it.

Smart ways to plan

  • Decide your budget and weight first. It is easier to stay on budget when you know how many grams you want.
  • Compare quotes ahead of time. Collect estimates from two or three jewellers a few days before, using the same weight and karat.
  • Consider coins for the tradition. If the purpose is to buy gold on the day, a small coin or bar carries a much lower making cost than jewellery.
  • Look at advance booking carefully. Some jewellers let you lock the rate in advance for a deposit. Read the terms, including what happens if the price falls and whether the booking can be cancelled.
  • Keep the paperwork. Make sure the bill shows the rate, weight, making charge and GST, and that hallmarked pieces carry the HUID.

If you cannot buy on the day

Many families buy a small amount on the festival and make larger purchases when it suits their budget. Gold bought on any other day is the same gold. What matters is the price you pay and the quality you receive.

Frequently asked questions

Is gold cheaper on Akshaya Tritiya or Dhanteras?

Not necessarily. The gold rate follows the market. Some jewellers offer lower making charges on these days, which can reduce the total, so compare the final bill.

Should I buy gold coins or jewellery on Dhanteras?

Coins and bars carry far lower making costs, so they suit buyers who mainly want to hold gold. Jewellery suits those who want to wear or gift it.

Can I book gold in advance at today's rate?

Some jewellers allow it. Read the terms carefully, including whether the booking can be cancelled and what happens if the rate falls.
